About Elephant Sanctuary Tour

A guide for your day with elephants

Elephant Sanctuary Tour is an independent guide for everyone who wants to see elephants near Chiang Mai. Here you will find how the full day with a waterfall and a bamboo raft ride works, how the Chiang Mai elephant tours compare, how World Animal Protection and the researchers who study captive elephants judge a venue, whether a half day, a full day or a night suits you, what to wear and bring, which day trips leave from Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui, which months are dry or wet, and what is known about Thailand's wild and captive elephants.

The site is available in English and five additional languages. It is written first in English.

How we research

Every number on our pages comes from a source that we link to at the bottom of the page: mostly World Animal Protection, the IUCN SSC Asian Elephant Specialist Group, a peer-reviewed review of captive elephant welfare by researchers at Chiang Mai University and the Smithsonian, Smithsonian's National Zoo, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Thai Meteorological Department. The month-by-month climate figures are the World Meteorological Organization's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Chiang Mai station, and the day length is our own calculation. Information on tours, that is duration, activities, languages, inclusions, and starting prices, is taken from the offers on GetYourGuide.

Venues differ in what they let visitors do with the elephants, and welfare organisations and scientists do not always agree on what is acceptable. That is why we tell you plainly what each listing states, what the sources say, and leave the choice to you.

How we make money

Elephant Sanctuary Tour is funded through the GetYourGuide affiliate program. When you book through one of our links, we receive a commission; your price remains the same. There are no advertising banners here, and we do not sell your data.

Who is behind it
